South African Bobotie

Oh the aroma!The taste is delectable. serve with Yellow Rice and Mango Chutney

3 slices gf day old bread
1 1/2 cups milk
2 medium onions, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 cup slivered almonds
1/2 cup raisins
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3 teaspoon curry powder
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 bay leaf
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon white vinegar
zest of 1 lemon
juice of 1 lemon
1 1/2 pounds extra lean ground beef
2 whole eggs

Soak bread in milk. Squeeze milk from bread, reserving milk. Combine all ingredients, except milk and 1 egg. Press mixture into an 11”x7” baking dish. Add enough milk to reserved milk to make 3/4 cup. Beat together milk and remaining egg. Pour over meat mixture. Garnish top with a few bay leaves
Bake, uncovered, at 350°F 1 hour, or until golden brown and firm to the touch. Serve with South African Yellow Rice, vegetables and mango chutney
